Since its publication in 2007, the Systems Modeling Language (SysML) 1.x has become the lingua franca of Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) across many industries and domains. Soon, after roughly 18 years, a completely revised version of the Systems Modeling Language — SysML v2 — will be published by the Object Management Group (OMG) in 2025. Numerous insights and new requirements from nearly 20 years of practical use of SysML 1.x have flowed into the development of the new SysML v2, in which we at oose were actively involved. As a leading training provider, we naturally account for this by already offering MBSE seminars with SysML v2 — even before the official release date.
In conversations with interested people from the target audience, the question frequently arises as to which training is right during this phase of transition from SysML 1.x to SysML v2. Should you switch to the new SysML v2 now? How much longer will SysML 1 models remain relevant? What do we do with the numerous SysML 1 models of our systems and products that we have painstakingly created and maintained over the years?
This article aims to provide orientation.
SysML 1.x and SysML v2 at a Glance
In general: SysML 1.x will continue to exist and be used in parallel for some years even after SysML v2 is published.
➡️ You already have many SysML 1.x models and want to train your team?
Then our seminar classics, such as "Model-Based Systems Engineering with SysML", optionally including certification as an OMG Certified Systems Modeling Professional, are probably exactly right for you.
➡️ You want to prepare for the switch to SysML v2?
For more experienced SysML users who have already created models with SysML 1.x, have good language skills, and are now perhaps planning a switch, our seminar "SysML v2 for Switchers" is the right training. In it you will learn the commonalities and differences to SysML 1.x to master a seamless transition to SysML v2.
➡️ You are new to MBSE and want to start directly with SysML v2?
You have recognised that MBSE with SysML is an indispensable key technology in today's age of complexity for mastering the development of future systems and digital products, but your organisation has not yet practised MBSE? You are facing demanding challenges — such as creating a Digital Thread, Digital Twins, or Smart Manufacturing — and want to tackle them with MBSE? Then now may be the ideal time to enter MBSE directly with the new SysML v2, namely with the training "Model-Based Systems Engineering with SysML v2".
